Partnership with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies

Throughout its history spanning more than 150 years, the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) has made a significant contribution to the internationalisation of Japanese society. With its focus on the study of languages, cultures and societies, and on imparting this knowledge, the university played a major role in Japan’s economic growth and international visibility during the second half of the 20th century.

Today, TUFS is a highly diverse institution with approximately 4,500 students, including over 600 international students from more than 70 countries each year. The range of courses on offer is primarily focused on linguistics and cultural studies, history and international relations. Courses are offered in both Japanese and English (see https://www.tufs.ac.jp/english/admission/non-degree/exchange/course_details.html).

The cooperation agreement between LMU and TUFS provides for a student exchange programme, under which students are exempt from tuition fees at the host university. Students at TUFS have the status of visiting students (non-degree). This entitles them to attend courses and use all university facilities (e.g. libraries), but does not lead to the award of an academic degree.

Four exchange places are available each year. Applications can be made for either a one-year or a one-semester exchange. The programme is primarily aimed at students majoring or minoring in History at all levels (BA, teacher training, MA, PhD). The recognition of academic credits must be clarified individually with the academic advisor.

Requirements

  • Good English language skills (at least B2 level)
  • An interest in the history and culture of Japan
  • Language skills are an advantage but are not essential at the time of application

Application procedure

Applications must be submitted to the programme coordinator:

  • a letter of motivation (stating whether you are applying for a one-semester or one-year exchange and outlining your planned course of study in Japan),
  • a CV in table format,
  • your current academic transcript (Notenspiegel),
  • a copy of your Abitur certificate (or equivalent) and, if already available, your BA/MA degree certificate,
  • a reference from a lecturer.

Applications must be submitted by 1 December for a stay abroad commencing in the following year. The interviews will take place shortly after the application deadline.

Information on funding options for the stay is available from the Office for International Affairs (e.g. Prosa, see https://www.lmu.de/de/workspace-fuer-studierende/auslandserfahrung-sammeln/auslandsstudium/finanzierung/prosa/). Please note that application periods are often lengthy, making it necessary to act well in advance. Following successful selection by TUFS, there is also the option to apply for the JASSO scholarship (see https://www.tufs.ac.jp/english/admission/non-degree/exchange/scholarship.html).
