Research interests

  • The German occupation and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union.
  • The Ukrainian national movement in the interwar period.
  • Ethnic minorities in the Ukrainian SSR.

Curriculum vitae

Tobias Wals, born in 1993, has been working as a research assistant at the Chair of Eastern and South-Eastern European History since October 2025.

  • 2011-2015 Studied at the University of Amsterdam and the Catholic University of Leuven.
  • 2019-2020 Research assistant at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam.
  • 2020-2024 Research assistant and doctoral candidate at the Centre for Holocaust Studies at the Institute for Contemporary History, visiting researcher at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Yad Vashem.
  • 2024-2025 Research assistant at the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History at LMU, liaison between the chair and the Centre for Holocaust Studies at the IfZ.

In addition to his academic work, he also works as a translator (Ukrainian-Dutch).
